It's important to know which materials and metals your jewellery is made from and how to best look after it. Fashion jewellery is a more affordable option to fine jewellery, without sacrificing the aesthetics. It uses alternative metals (which you can find out more about here link) which of course overtime can tarnish. Here’s some tips to help protect your jewellery. With the right care, high quality fashion jewellery can last a long time. Some of our most loyal customers, that purchased from our first ever collection still have their pieces today, in great condition almost 5 years later. https://icediyalondon.com/products/frosted-ice-cuban
So, what causes tarnishing and how can I avoid it?
You can’t avoid it completely, but you can certainly extend the lifespan of your jewellery with the proper care. Over time, your jewellery encounters moisture, acids, oils and air. Which can come from your skin composition or the air around you! That causes a reaction with the metal in the jewellery, causing it to eventually wear down and tarnish.
Your body chemistry can determine how long your jewellery lasts, of course along with other factors such as oxidising. If your skin turns green with the pieces you’re wearing, it’s probably due to the materials, this mainly happens with copper, but is not subjective to! It can also happen with gold and silver metals too. We like to use 18k gold plating and 925 sterling silver as it is long lasting and durable.
Here's some tips to extend your jewellery lifespan!
Keep it dry
Plated jewellery can get wet of course! However, if you’re looking to keep it for years to come its best to protect your jewellery from moisture and liquids, consider taking off your pieces before activities that may expose them to water. This includes showering, swimming, or doing dishes. Additionally, avoid wearing your jewellery when applying lotions or perfumes to keep them looking their best.
Avoid moisture & sunlight when storing
Store your jewellery in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and moisture. Humidity can cause metals to tarnish and gemstones to lose their lustre. Consider using silica gel packets or anti-tarnish strips to absorb moisture and prevent tarnishing.
For delicate pieces, consider wrapping them in a soft cloth before storing them in your jewellery box. This will provide an extra layer of protection and prevent scratches. You can also use our jewellery pouches provided.
USE JEWELLERY BOXES & ORGANIZERS
Invest in a jewellery box or organizer with compartments and hooks to keep your pieces safe and secure. Look for one with soft lining to prevent scratches and tarnishing. Jewellery boxes come in various sizes and styles, so you can choose one that fits your collection. We plan to bring you some soon! Stay tuned...
